The Battle of Thermopylae is told by first person narrative of Spartan captain Dilios. As such, this was not expected to be a 100% accurate portrayal of historical figures and events. This was a purposeful embellishment for the purposes of story-telling.

King Leonidas of Sparta leads an army of 300 soldiers to stall the Persian invasion of Greek nations. Badly outnumbered, the Spartans know that this is a suicide mission necessary to buy supporting Greek armies time to mount counter-attacks elsewhere. The Spartans choose the Thermopylae pass to negate the Persian numerical advantage, fully prepared to sacrifice their lives on behalf of Sparta.

Little character development, but impressive cinemetography that draws you right into the action. If you like Gladiator, you'll love 300.
