I am a 20 year-old tall thin female and just had my first spontaneous pneumothorax. I discovered what it was one week after I started having chest pain. Went to the hospital, where doctors tried oxygen therapy, then inserted a chest tube which resolved it.

I was planning to go on a 22-hour flight across the Pacific Ocean to Indonesia. The plane stops once in Japan. This flight will be 17 days after I was released from the hospital (when the xray showed a tiiiny speck of pneumothorax left) and 10 days after my follow-up xray (which showed the pneumo was completely gone).

Is it safe for me to fly? If so, should I get another xray a day before the flight to make sure it is still gone?

I would greatly appreciate any advice!

Hi

I would have a good read through some of the more popular threads in this Travel section, you'll find a number of people who have been in the same predicament as yourself.

This very recent post details flying 3 weeks post op :

And this one has some statistics and links to good articles :

I would always try and get the opinion of at least 2 doctors to reassure you of any possible risks. preferably lung specialists.

Good luck and let us know how you do ?

even if you have a tiny speck of air trapped in the chest cavity, remember that this can increase dramatically in the air.

definitely get an x-ray and at the same time the opinion of the specialist(s) as Rossoe advised.

good luck!

Thank you for the advice!

I arrived in Indonesia yesterday safe and sound! I am so happy!

But my lung hurt a little during the flights, and I was pretty nervous. Be careful yall
